Arlington County Board seeks Feedback on Climate Action Resolution

Published on January 31, 2025

On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, the County Board announced that it will consider adopting a Climate Action Resolution at its February 2025 County Board meeting. The Board welcomes feedback on the draft of this resolution via this feedback form. To ensure the Board has ample time to read and review comments, interested residents should submit feedback by February 14, end of day.

“Much like the County’s Equity Resolution, this resolution aims to provide framing principles that will guide a whole-of-government approach to address the current climate crisis,” said Chair Takis Karantonis. “Every part of our government should be in sync and attuned to deliver on our climate policies and goals.”

The draft resolution lays out 11 actions and goals, which include:

  • Prioritizing climate solutions that offer co-benefits to ensure environmental, economic, and social well-being;

  • Partnering with private sector, non-profits, and other institutional partners that drive our local economy to encourage the adoption of carbon neutral operational practices;

  • Updating the Community Energy Plan to create a comprehensive Climate Action Plan that strives to expeditiously achieve the County’s current goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050; and

  • Ensuring sustainability and climate change goals are a priority in the Comprehensive Plan’s new Guiding Principles Framework.

Board member Susan Cunningham highlighted the Board’s intent to invite and mobilize the community to join in these efforts. “A top theme in our Arlington 2050 work last year was that residents want an Arlington that is ‘Green’, ‘Natural’, and with connections to nature everywhere. This resolution will help ground our investments and community-wide efforts to bring that vision to life.”
