Nine College Students Begin Cadet Program

Published on April 02, 2024

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) proudly welcomes nine college students to the ACPD Cadet Program. In February, these individuals embarked on an exciting journey to see firsthand what it takes to be in the policing profession and prepare them for a career as an Arlington County police officer.

The current ACPD Cadet Program was launched in the summer of 2023 with the hopes of giving college students interested in careers in law enforcement the opportunity to receive comprehensive, on-the-job training while working towards their degree. Cadets operate in a part-time capacity while receiving mentorship and exposure to a wide range of law enforcement career functions. The program ultimately aims to transition participants from cadets to police officers upon completion of minimum requirements.

ACPD remains committed to a maintaining an agency of individuals who represent our diverse community. This class of cadets consists of five men and four women hailing from Northern Virginia (including two from Arlington) and Maryland with languages spoken including Thai, Arabic and Spanish. The cadets are working towards higher education degrees in various areas including Criminal Justice/Criminology, Psychology, Government and Environmental Science.

While the cadets have just begun their tenure, they have met with the department’s Executive Staff who provided an in-depth look at ACPD’s history and spoke about their personal journeys to becoming leaders in the department. Events like the 2024 Polar Plunge at Leesylvania State Park and the Feel the Heritage Festival at Charles Drew Community Center in February served as introductions to sworn and professional staff members and the many community outreach activities ACPD regularly participates in. The spring months will continue to bring additional public events and outreach opportunities around Arlington the cadets will support.

In the coming weeks, the cadets will receive a comprehensive introductory training curriculum on topics such as department policies, patrol tactics, Narcan/Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) and police incident report writing. Upon completion, cadets will be assigned to assist various functions within the department including the Criminal Investigations Division, Special Operations Section, Property Unit, Human Resources and Management Section and the Community Engagement Division. Assignments will occur on a rotating basis to ensure each cadet receives diverse hands-on education of the department’s key initiatives of crime prevention and control, transportation safety, community engagement and employee wellness.
