Published on July 26, 2024

Jennifer Fioretti has been named Arlington County’s Assistant County Manager for Climate Policy in the County Manager’s Office. In this role, she will provide vision and leadership in developing policy across County government and the broader community to address the County’s climate goals.

“I am excited that Jennifer has agreed to take on this critical role for Arlington. She has demonstrated over and over her ability to successfully lead ‘whole of government’ teams that have led to tangible results,” said County Manager Mark Schwartz. “Jennifer’s broad knowledge across various policy and program areas will support Arlington’s environmental and sustainability success and serve Arlington well as we move to the next phase of our climate action.”

Fioretti has been with Arlington County since 2003, working in a variety of policy and operational roles across several departments. Immediately prior to this appointment, Fioretti served as the Deputy Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, where she led the update to the Forestry and Natural Resources Master Plan and the adoption of the Biophilic Cities Resolution. Fioretti also worked in the Department of Environmental Services coordinating regional transportation initiatives and investments, including bringing BikeShare to Arlington. Fioretti has also led and served on cross-organizational initiatives including standing up the Joint Facilities Advisory Commission and the recent update to Arlington Public Schools’ Strategic Plan.

“I am excited to bring my experience working in multiple areas of Arlington County Government to help the County reach its climate goals. I look forward to working alongside great County teams like the Arlington Initiative to Rethink Energy (AIRE), our volunteer commissions, and community organizations that have long been committed to addressing climate change—and I anticipate all of us making great strides for Arlington.”

Fioretti earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Development from Clark University and a Master of Public Administration with a focus on State and Local Government from George Mason University.

About the Climate Policy Office

The Climate Policy Office will lead the community and cross-departmental effort for the next update to the Community Energy Plan (CEP) and the transition to climate action. To support this work, the Climate Policy Office in the County Manager’s Office will be expanded from two to four positions. As a first step, Fioretti will be joined by Rich Dooley from the Department of Environmental Services. Dooley, who will serve as Director of Climate Policy, led the team that created the original CEP and managed the update of the 2019 CEP update. Dooley has over thirty years of experience in the private and public sectors managing complex environmental programs covering many subject areas with strong ties to climate policy.

Bill Eger who served as the County’s first-ever Climate Policy Officer will continue his work in the Department of Public Safety, Communications, & Emergency Management on climate resilience in Arlington’s public safety functions.
