Police Investigate In-Custody Death at Detention Facility

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Arlington County Police Department is investigating an in-custody death at the Arlington County Detention Facility.

At approximately 7:56 a.m. on December 12, police and fire were dispatched to the report of cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, it was determined David Gerhard, 55, of Hedgesville, WV, was found unresponsive in the medical unit within the Arlington County Detention Facility. Arlington County Sheriff’s Office deputies and medical staff began immediate resuscitation efforts until the arrival of Arlington County Fire Department medics. He was transported to Virginia Hospital Center where he was pronounced deceased.

Mr. Gerhard was being held in the Arlington County Detention Facility since November 20, 2023, on Failure to Comply with Support Obligations and Contempt of Court.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine cause of death.
