Arlington Code Enforcement Is First in VA to Attain IAS Accreditation

Published on August 13, 2021

The Arlington County Code Enforcement Section of the Inspection Services Division (ISD) is the first property maintenance enforcement agency in Virginia to obtain accreditation from the International Accreditation Services (IAS).

IAS is a subsidiary of the International Code Council (ICC), which provides objective evidence that an organization operates at the highest ethical, legal, and technical standards. This accreditation demonstrates that the Inspection Services Division meets the national standards for property maintenance, structural, life-safety, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, accessibility, and energy conservation enforcement.

With the Code Enforcement accreditation, all of Arlington's Inspection Services Division sections have been accredited by IAS. This designation is critical to accomplishing Inspection Services mission to provide the highest quality of public service and building safety while ensuring compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and other applicable local codes and ordinances.

There are only 20 accredited building departments in the United States, and only 12 of them include Property Maintenance Enforcement.

Arlington County is committed to ensuring the safety and sustainability of structures for residents, workers, and visitors. The Arlington Safe Structure Initiative was established in 2010 to guide performance and compliance expectations for existing structures subject to the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.

The Arlington Safe Structures Initiative supports the reporting of substandard conditions for investigation by inspectors. County inspectors conduct limited public area surveys of Arlington's multifamily communities to assure compliance with property-related codes and ordinances. In addition, inspectors perform comprehensive common area code inspections at older multifamily properties as protection to Arlington's residents and housing portfolio.
