County Board Wrap-Up Media Release for April 2022 Meeting

 

Several actions took place at the Arlington County Board's Saturday, April 23, 2022, regular County Board Meeting, including:

  • The Board unanimously approved the redevelopment of the PenPlace block in Pentagon City as part of the next phase of Amazon’s HQ2 for the parcel located at 550 Army Navy Drive.  The actions will progress plans for the construction of four new office buildings with retail pavilions, a childcare center, a new public park, and a 300 student high school. Additional community benefits include an affordable housing contribution, transportation infrastructure improvements, and a commitment to sustainable design. The Board vote adopts the PenPlace, Park Master Plan and Design Guidelines.

  • The Board voted to adopt certain elements of the Clarendon Sector Plan that include:
  • An update to the 2006 plan, which includes several revisions to policies and design guidelines related to future development.
  • General Land Use Plan (GLUP) Map and Booklet amendments.
  • Zoning ordinance amendments to coincide with the updated sector plan.
  • The Board awarded a contract to Sagres Construction Corporation for the construction of Stormwater Management on county property. The contract came in at just under $1M and is the first contract awarded under the County’s Prevailing Wage initiative.

  • The Board approved amendments to the ordinance on polling places and ordinances to comply with local and state law, as well as identify alternative locations for polling places affected by construction. This not only brings Arlington in line with the Virginia code but demonstrates our commitment to ensuring every voter has a voice and an opportunity to share it.

  • The Board awarded a contract to Milani Construction, LLC for the construction of the Columbia Pike Multi-Modal Street Improvements and Utility Undergrounding Project between South Oak Street and South Orme Street as well as between South Oakland Street and South Wakefield Street. This more than $40M project will include improvements such as wider sidewalks, enhanced pedestrian crossings, street lights, traffic signals, on-street parking, storm sewer, sanitary sewer and water infrastructure improvements, conversion of overhead utility to undergrounding, street trees, and landscaping.

On Tuesday, April 26, 2022, the County Board held its Recessed Meeting.  Several actions were taken, including the passing of the Fiscal Year 2023 County Operating Budget.  A detailed media release on the budget can be found on the County website.

On Thursday, April 28, 2022, Board Chair Katie Cristol and Member Matt de Ferranti will be joined by Elenor Hodges, Executive Director of EcoAction Arlington.  In celebration of Arbor Day, the trio will discuss environmental issues with a specific focus on trees, including urban canopy efforts.
