Board Approves Swimming Pool in Nauck

The County Board today approved the Macedonia Baptist Church's plans to build a new community swimming pool in the Nauck neighborhood, on its property at 3440 22nd St. S., and to share parking on its church parking lot at 3412 22nd St. S. with the pool. The Board also approved a Zoning Ordinance amendment related to community swimming pools.

"This swimming pool will be a great addition to the community," Arlington County Board Chair Katie Cristol said. "The County worked closely with the church and the community to make it possible to restore an amenity that has been missing for too long from the Nauck neighborhood."

The project includes the pool, a seasonal dome and a community building. The Board approved reducing minimum setbacks for the pool-related structures and allowing reduced off-site shared parking of about 60 spaces on the neighboring parking lot.

The new seven-lane pool and its 25-foot tall seasonal dome will replace an existing pool, built in the 1960s, that has not been used for many years. The pool will be used by the neighborhood and the Arlington community, and also will be leased to the Arlington Water Polo Club for practices and training.

The redevelopment also will include a two-story community building that will house bathrooms/changing rooms on the ground floor and several community rooms on the top floor. An existing two-story brick building, home to Funshine Preschool, will remain on the site.

Swimming Pool Zoning Ordinance amendment

In a related action, the Board approved a Zoning Ordinance amendment, granting the Board authority to modify use standards for fencing, placement, setbacks and lot coverage for community swimming pools. The amendment is meant to address zoning challenges that community swimming pool operators encounter in getting projects approved, or in trying to expand or update an existing pool. With the change, community swimming pools in zoning districts where they are approved by use permit could seek these modifications.
