Fire. Earth. Water. Air. Juried Member Show At Focus Gallery July 29-Aug 30
Dates: July 29 Aug 30, 2019
Location: Crystal City Shops at 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, VA 22202
Opening Reception and Meet the Artists: Friday, August 2, 5-7pm
Free and open to the public
Arlington, VA – Fire. Earth. Water. Air. These four elements of western culture were believed to be essential to life, and can be found in many ancient religions. From July 29-Aug 30, come see how artists from the Arlington Artists Alliance interpreted and explored this theme in an exciting new juried show at the Focus Gallery. Members working in all media were invited to submit works that convey the richness and aesthetic beauty conveyed by nature through the elements. The show was juried by Nancy Pane Fortwengler, a resident artist at the Torpedo Factory.
While you’re browsing the work at the Focus Gallery, don’t forget to peruse the work in the main gallery! The Featured artist for August is Anya Getter, whose whimsical collage/mixed media pieces are inspired by quotes, animals and exotic places. Getter incorporates many found objects and mosaic into her work, resulting in varied textures and surfaces.
Stop by the First Friday opening reception on Friday, August 2, from 5-7pm, and meet the artists! The reception is free and open to the public. It’s hot outside – cool off with the artists inside!

ABOUT THE GALLERY:
Located in the Crystal City Shops at 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, VA 22202, this visual arts venue showcases the work of established and emerging regional artists. It is one of two large gallery spaces for the 200-member Arlington Artists Alliance; the other is Gallery Clarendon at 2800 Clarendon Blvd. in Arlington.
Each month the gallery changes its entire exhibit and presents a new show from its talented members in many forms: paintings, sculpture, glass and ceramic work, jewelry, mixed media and photography. Gallery Underground anchors the visual arts component of Crystal City’s Art Underground, and on First Fridays (first Friday of every month), it hosts an art reception free and open to all from 5-7pm, along with Crystal City’s Art Underground “First Friday” events where you can also jam at ArtJamz Underground, take a stroll along the Fotowalk, and catch a show at Synetic Theater.
Gallery Underground has been named our region’s “Best Art Gallery” in Northern Virginia Magazine’s 2019 reader survey. In addition to monthly rotating exhibitions, Gallery Underground hosts a variety of community events, like lunchtime paint-ins and dance and musical performances. Gallery Underground is sponsored by the Arlington Artists Alliance (AAA), in partnership with the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID), and JBG Smith. For more information about Gallery events, visit www.galleryunderground.org.
Gallery Hours: Mon-Fri 10am – 6pm
