Columbia Pike : S. Wakefield St to S. Oakland St

In Design

County staff are reviewing the final plans for this segment of Columbia Pike. Given what we've learned from previous Columbia Pike projects about underground conflicts, staff will request additional test holes and apply new technologies (i.e. ground penetrating radar) for this segment before construction begins. These steps will help minimize underground risks during construction but will not eliminate these risks.

About the Project

This work is part of the Columbia Pike Multimodal project that will make Columbia Pike a safer, more accessible route for all users. Arlington is transforming this main thoroughfare into a complete street that balances all modes of travel and supports high-quality, high-frequency transit service.

In addition to visible improvements to the road, extensive work will occur below the roadway to replace aging and leak-prone water and sewer pipes and to bury existing overhead utilities underground.

Streetscape improvements will include:

  • Wider sidewalks
  • New street lights
  • Upgraded traffic signals
  • Street trees

Public Process

Project staff have been meeting with adjacent property owners regarding this project. Additionally, staff attended meetings of the following civic associations to give a project update:

  • Alcova Heights
  • Barcroft

Staff will continue their outreach to nearby civic associations as the project moves forward.
