About the Project

The Gateway Park Interim Dog Park project was a proposal to redevelop a portion of the west end of Gateway Park into a temporary dog park. The facility was proposed to include separate areas to accommodate both large and small dogs, fencing with screening in some areas, upgraded lighting, a water source for dogs, grass surfacing, double entry gates, maintenance gates, repurposed and ADA accessible benches, dog waste receptacles, a message board, and standard County signage. Gateway Park is currently lighted, and the upgraded lights associated with this project allow visitors to use the dog park until the lights turn off at 9 p.m.

This park was approved in early 2021 and will be available for community use until a park master plan is developed for Gateway Park and there is funding to construct the improvements. The temporary dog park will be reviewed annually to ensure it is operating safely and in accordance with the County’s policies regarding temporary park uses and facilities.

BACKGROUND

The Gateway Park interim dog facility was proposed by the Rosslyn Dog Owners Group (R-Dogs) in 2019. A preliminary site review and project evaluation helped determine that this is an appropriate site for a temporary dog facility. According to the 2019 Public Spaces Master Plan (PSMP), there is limited access to dog parks in the Rosslyn area and there is a need for three additional dog parks by the year 2035. This proposal will help meet the goals identified in the 2019 PSMP. This project was also developed in partnership with the Rosslyn BID.

About the Process

This and all temporary amenity requests must undergo a proposal review and site evaluation process. These processes have been completed and a draft dog park design was presented during a community engagement process in the third quarter of 2020.
