Pentagon City Metro Station Second Elevator

Construction Update - September 2021

The contractor is preparing to start construction on this project, with initial work activities scheduled to begin the week of Sept. 20.

The construction area will be on the southwest corner of the South Hayes Street and 12th Street South intersection, in front of the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City.

What to expect during construction:

  • Project work hours will be 7 am to 9 pm on Mondays through Fridays and 10 am to 9 pm on Saturdays and Sundays
    • Nighttime/overnight work is also expected during the project
    • Construction will be paused from Nov. 15 to Jan. 15 during the holiday season
  • South Hayes Street travel lanes will remain open, but the parking lane next to the construction area will be closed
  • A section of the southbound Hayes Street bike lane next to the construction area will be closed – bicyclists will be directed to merge into the travel lane
  • The south-side crosswalk across South Hayes Street at 12th Street will be closed
  • Bus stop F on South Hayes Street, next to the west-side escalator station entrance, will be closed. Service will be moved to bus stop T2 further south on Hayes Street.

About the Project

The Pentagon City Metrorail Station provides access to multiple retail, government and commercial office buildings and is a transfer point for regional and local transit buses and numerous private bus services. Currently, passengers needing to use a street elevator to access the station must enter or exit on the east side of South Hayes Street.

Construction of a second elevator on the west side of South Hayes Street, near the existing west side escalator, will improve access for patrons making transit connections and for Pentagon City retail customers and tourists. It also will provide redundancy for this station entrance when one elevator is out of service for any reason. The project includes improving the appearance of the existing elevator on the east side of South Hayes Street to make it look more contemporary and visible to customers.

In 2010 the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) completed, at Arlington’s request, a Feasibility Study of adding an elevator at the Pentagon City Metrorail Station, in anticipation of streetscape enhancements planned in the vicinity.

At their Feb. 20, 2021, meeting, the County Board approved a contract to W.M. Schlosser Company, Inc. for the construction of the Pentagon City Metro Station second elevator. Construction started in September 2021, with completion anticipated in spring 2023.

Funding

The construction contract is authorized for approximately $6.5 million, including contingency. The contract is funded by federal, state and local sources
