Outfall Repair & Rehabilitation
Storm drain pipes end at outfalls, where water leaves the pipe and enters local streams. Over time, runoff can create erosion and the outfall infrastructure can degrade or break. Outfall rehabilitation projects repair the infrastructure and stabilize steep slopes.
Outfall infrastructure condition is evaluated as part of Arlington's stream assessments. By reducing erosion near streams, outfall repair projects also help fulfill the water quality requirements of the Stormwater Permit issued to Arlington County by Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
Project goals can typically include:
- Create a stable outfall
- Maintain the storm sewer infrastructure
- Repair erosion
- Remove invasive plants.
