Orage by Kate Stewart
Project Details

Artist: Kate Stewart
Materials: Latex paint, oil paint
Location: Courthouse Parking Lot Pop-Up Plaza
Date: 2016-2019

This mural covered three parking spaces transformed into a pop-up plaza adjacent to “The Grove” – the last remaining vestige of the original Arlington County Courthouse site from 1898.

Stewart’s work is heavily influenced by the landscape and makes direct and symbolic references to space, light and air.  She is especially interested in weather events, revealing the sublime side of nature through her use of jarring color combinations, flying debris and undulating abstract forms. The title of the mural Orage is a French word meaning “storm”. Her study of traditional Chinese ink painting is evidenced by her brush work which were exhibited on an Art on the ART Bus in 2016.
