Community Survey – Suicide Prevention and Awareness

Arlington County has adopted the Zero Suicide initiative as part of an effort to reduce the incidence of suicide in our community. We are seeking feedback from residents and community members on suicide awareness, prevention training and services.

Local and national statistics on suicide

  • 25% of Arlington 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students surveyed reported feeling sad or hopeless for 2+ weeks.
  • There were 41 reported completed suicides in Arlington between 2013-2015.
  • Suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death for ages 10-24.
  • Each year 42,773 Americans die by suicide.
  • For every ONE suicide there are an estimated 25 attempts.
  • Suicide costs the U.S. $44 billion annually.
