Residential or Commercial?

How do you know which kind of permit – residential or commercial – your project requires?

Whether you’re applying for a Residential Building Permit or a Commercial Building Permit is determined by the International Code Council (ICC) standards used to review the permits, not the use of a building – as a home, retail, etc.

Use the tabs below to determine which building permit to apply for.

Residential Building Permit

  • Your project must meet both of the following standards:
    • Detached one- or two-family dwelling or townhouse, and
    • No more than 3 stories in height above ground-level, as defined by the Building Code

Commercial Building Permit

  • Any project that doesn’t meet the Residential Building Permit standards (see other tab)
