CALL TO ARTISTS: City of Charlotte CFD Firehouse No. 11 Public Art Opportunity, Arts & Science Council (ASC), Charlotte, NC
DEADLINE: Friday, October 13, 2023, 11:59 p.m.
The selected artist will work with the ASC, staff from the City of Charlotte’s General Services Department, Boomerang Design, CFD representatives, and local communities to create artwork that is complementary to the architecture and design of the building. The impactful artwork should also reference the history, commitment, and service of the Charlotte Fire Department. The selected artist/artist team will be expected to engage with both fire department staff and area residents to develop the concept for their work.
The anticipated low-relief artwork will be highly visible, sited on the façade of the building facing Bancroft Street, on the side of the building. The art wall measures 4’H x 36’W, with an 800lb capacity. The selected artist will be responsible for creating a visually interesting experience for viewers from a distance as well as up close. The planned building material for the space is modular brick veneer. The selected artist will also be responsible for installation of the artwork, including necessary blocking, and all materials and equipment necessary to execute the artwork; e.g. scaffolding, telescoping boom lifts, etc.

DC-area artists may apply for support in areas of Project & Presentation and Research depending on which best supports your practice at this time.

$7,500 Project & Presentation Grants support ongoing or new projects that embrace unconventional or D.I.Y. values and will be presented publicly in the DC-area during the grant period. Project & Presentation grants are intended to directly support artists presenting work in spaces beyond commercial galleries, museums, or established non-profit art spaces.

$5,000 Research Grants are for DC-area artists to further their practices through ideation, research, and experimentation. Grant funds compensate you for your intellectual labor, support payment for other artists and thinkers for their time and contributions, and other research-related expenses.
Applications will be reviewed by an independent panel of artists and arts professionals with up to 10 grants awarded. The grant period is from January–December 2024.

For WPA’s 2023–2024 program season, we are inviting DC-area artists to submit ideas for one-night only events around the question: “Where should we start?”
WPA’s first-ever symposium How can we gather now? (March 2023) explored questions of community and the potential of gathering as a crucial practice. During her keynote talk, author and organizer adrienne maree brown spoke about the different scales and modalities of gathering and how healing and change start at the individual level.
As we embark on our 48th season, we are excited to invite DC-area artists to imagine programs that will challenge us towards new unimagined directions for future project development in response to the question: “Where should we start?”
Your program can respond to this question in any way that interests you and supports your research. The program you propose may take any form, including: film screening, workshop, conversation, performance, book presentation, and beyond. As this call is designed for anyone from the DC-area to apply, so should your event be designed for anyone from the DC-area to attend. While proposals for virtual events are not accepted, hybrid events are welcome.

The Montgomery College Collaborative A.i.R. is a 3-week program in which a professional artist is embedded in the Rockville and Germantown Art Departments, providing the unique opportunity for students to work directly with contemporary artists other than faculty. Students have the authentic experience of creating artwork for public installation, as part of collaboration with peers, faculty, and the artist working toward a common goal of an art installation or social practice project. The Artist Roster for Wall Projects (Roster) connects pre-qualified local artists residing in the Greater Washington area to commissions for wall projects in Montgomery County. The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC) seeks muralists, as well as artists who work in mosaic, tile, low-relief and other installation media suitable for temporary or permanent installation on exterior walls for the Roster. Montgomery County-based ALAANA Artists (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, and Native American) are encouraged to apply.

The Baltimore Mural Program was created in 1975 to make Baltimore neighborhoods more attractive, instill a sense of pride, provide employment for local artists in their own field, combat graffiti in neighborhoods, and engage young people in the beautification of their own communities. Working with the artists, neighborhood groups/associations and funding sources, the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA) coordinates and directs this ongoing program.

The Baltimore Mural Program has produced more than 250 murals across the city, creating an outdoor public museum for the enjoyment of the people of Baltimore. We work with local mural artists who have experience working with communities.

Gallery Underground is currently accepting applications for new gallery members. We have openings for 2 and 3D work. We are located in the Crystal City shops near the new Amazon headquarters. Gallery Underground is an Arlington Artists Alliance gallery promoting the works of established and emerging regional artists. There is no fee to apply.

Busboys and Poets, a community gathering place, restaurant and cultural hub for artists, activists, writers, thinkers and dreamers, is looking for visual art in all media to display at its seven locations in the DMV. Artists may submit up to 12 original works to be reviewed, ranging from but not limited to drawings, painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, assemblage, fiber, quilts, etc. Standing sculpture should be no larger than 24” in height.

THEMES: Art images reflecting equity and social justice, womanism, life in the DMV, COVID-19, community transformation, family, portraiture, whimsy, abstraction and life experiences within diverse cultures are encouraged for submission.

Artists selected will be notified by email at least two weeks in advance of installation.

1455 is always looking for fresh, original contributions to its bi-monthly digital publication Movable Type. Originally conceived as a magazine "by writers for writers" 1455 has greatly expanded its scope and seeks to celebrate storytelling of all types. In 2022, the goal is a more diverse, inclusive multimedia experience; as such, we welcome poetry, flash fiction, essays, memoir, illustrations, visual art, comics, and recorded video of music or dance (interviews and artist statements are also considered). Having already showcased best-selling authors, academics, and creatives, the goal is to further establish Movable Type as a provocative forum for meaningful engagement with art.

Each issue of Movable Type revolves around a theme, and 1455 welcomes submissions year-round. Each issue will be accompanied by a live (virtual) reading, featuring the contributors. At UpCycle, we rethink our notion of waste, collecting cast-offs from our community to serve as creative art materials.
