The Special Operations Section

Ensuring the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists and maintaining the safe and orderly flow of traffic is the primary mission of the Police Department’s Special Operations Section. As part of the Department’s traffic safety program, the Special Operation Section works with other County agencies and community members to address areas of concern. Resources are deployed based on the following priorities: Accident Reduction, School Zone Safety, Bike/Pedestrian Safety and other areas of concern as identified by citizens.

In order to fulfill our mission, the Special Operations Section shall:

• Conduct selective enforcement in problem areas
• Respond in a timely and effective manner to community complaints and concerns
• Participate in local and regional traffic safety programs
• Collaborate with public and private entities to efficiently and effectively address transportation safety concerns

Monthly Transportation Safety Highlight: Secure Your Loads for Safer Roads

Transporting oversized cargo can be difficult, and even dangerous. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), from 2016-2020, approximately 16,878 people in the United States were injured per year when a vehicle collided with another object while on the road. Securing your load to your vehicle by using ropes or straps, both side-to-side and front-to-back, can greatly reduce the likelihood of causing a crash. No matter their size, ensure that all of your items are secure before you travel for a safe and successful trip.

To ensure the safe transport of cargo, remember these important tips when loading your vehicle:

• Tie objects down with rope, netting, or straps
• Cover with a sturdy tarp or netting
• Don’t overload your vehicle or trailer
• Always double-check your load to make sure it’s secure.
