AAC Competition Groups

Below are the descriptions for the Competition groups in the Arlington Aquatic Club swim team that are part of the Arlington County Aquatics Program. These groups are for youth ages 7 -18 years.  These groups are for swimmers who wish to swim and compete year round.  Competitive groups are swimmers who are considering or want to make swimming their primary sport.

Swimmers in these groups must be legal in all four competitive strokes to be eligible.  Typically swimmers in these groups have participated in pre-competition groups before entry into these groups, unless they have come from another area or national USA swimming program.  These programs have practice and meet attendance requirements.  The column on the right below indicates the pre-requisites that will be needed to prove sufficient before placement. Most swimmers will repeat groups to master necessary required skills or achieve goals.


Age Group Prep (ages 7-10 years)

Description

This is the entry level competitive swim program. The program is designed for young swimmers with limited competitive experience. This program will focus on developing and refining the four competitive strokes, and provide instruction on proper competitive starts and turns. Participants will receive introduction to basic training principles such as using the pace clock and training for USA swimming competitions.

Swimmers can expect to practice twice per week and compete.

Prerequisites

  • Swimmers must be able to swim all four competitive strokes legally to qualify for this program
  • Complete an evaluation

Swimmer who prove able to handle the training and are willing to make the commitment to train more  and compete may be eligible to move up into the Age Group Program


Age Group (ages 8-12 years)

Description

This is the second level of competition training for youth swimmers. This program continues to focus on proper stroke development and refinement in all four competitive strokes. This level will include competition skills which are required for advancement into higher level competitive programs.  Increased practice attendance and commitment are required, and swimmers will receive increased aerobic training and the introduction of proper racing techniques.

Swimmers are expected to swim 2-3 times per week and compete in 4 meets.

Prerequisites

  • Swimmers must be able to swim all four competitive strokes legally to qualify for this program
  • Swimmers must coordinate with staff and successfully complete a test practice before joining this program

Swimmers in this program must maintain proper monthly practice attendance and must complete in four meets during the regular season to remain in the program and be considered for advancement into Senior Prep program.


Age Group Plus (ages 12-14 years)

Description

This group designed for the pre-teen/teen swimmer that still wants to be competitive but may not be ready for the Senior Prep group yet. This program continues to focus on proper stroke development and refinement in all four competitive strokes. Focus is on increase in training hours. Increased practice attendance and commitment are required, and swimmers will receive increased aerobic training, and the introduction of proper racing techniques.

Swimmers are expected to swim 2-3 times per week and compete in 4 meets.

  • Swimmers must coordinate with staff and successfully complete a test practice before joining this program

Age Group Performance (ages 9-12 years)

Description

This program is our advanced year round training program for age group swimmers who have displayed a dedication to the sport of swimming and are willing to make the commitment to practice and train at a higher level. Swimmers in this group will be held to a very high standard of practice discipline and attitude and will be given advanced training on underwater kicking, race preparation and strategy, mental training, as well as increased swim training and dry land exercises. Swimmers in this group will be expected to train for and compete in high levels of competition, such as PVS Junior Olympics and the Eastern Zone IMX and Eastern Zone championship meets.

Swimmers must attend 4-5 practices a week and compete regularly.

Prerequisites

  • Swimmers must be able to swim all four competitive strokes legally to qualify for this program
  • Swimmers must coordinate with staff and successfully complete a test practice before joining this program
  • Swimmers are often “selected” for this level of program by coaches.

Swimmers in this program must maintain 75%  or more monthly practice attendance and must complete in all of the meets selected by the coach to remain in the program and be considered for advancement into Senior Prep program


Senior Prep (ages 11-14 years)

Description

This year round program is designed for swimmers who chose swimming as their primary sport and are capable of handling the increased training that will lead to one of AAC’s senior competitive swim programs. This program will have increased training hours, yardage and dry land practices as compared to our Age Group and Age Group Performance programs.  It is designed to prepare swimmers for advancement into our Senior and Elite programs. Swimmers in this group will be expected to train for and compete at high level PVS Championship meets, as well as preparing for Zone and Sectional level competitions.

Swimmers must attend 5 practices a week and compete regularly.

Prerequisites

  • Swimmers must be able to swim all four competitive strokes legally to qualify for this program
  • Swimmers must coordinate with staff and successfully complete a test practice before joining this program
  • Swimmers must have the correct discipline and attitude to participate in this intense training program

Swimmers in this program must maintain 75% or more monthly practice attendance and must complete in all of the meets selected by the coach to remain in the program and be considered for advancement into Senior program


Senior (ages 13 & older)

Description

This is our second highest training group. It is designed for swimmers that have chosen swimming as their primary sport and have made the commitment to train to qualify and compete at the Sectional level and higher. Swimmers in this training group should plan on mandatory 6-8 practices per week, competing once a month at the meets selected by the coach, training at the level required to qualify for Sectional and National Level competitions. This program will offer the most advanced training techniques and dry land exercises designed to help swimmers reach the highest level of competition, as well as prepare swimmers to move to the Elite group and to swim in college.

Swimmers must attend 6-8 practices per week and compete once a month in meets selected by coach.

Prerequisites

  • Swimmers must be able to swim all four competitive strokes legally to qualify for this program
  • Swimmers must coordinate with staff and successfully complete a test practice before joining this program
  • Swimmers must have the correct discipline and attitude to participate in this intense training program

Swimmers in this program must maintain 75% or more monthly practice attendance and must complete in all of the meets selected by the coach to remain in the program and be considered for advancement into Senior program


Elite (ages 13& older)

Description

This is our most advanced training group offered. It is designed for swimmers that have chosen swimming as their primary sport and have made the commitment to train to compete at the National level. Swimmers will train at the level required to qualify for National Level competitions. This program will offer the most advanced training techniques and dry land exercises designed to help swimmers reach the highest level of competition, as well as prepare swimmers to swim in college.

Swimmers must attend 8 practices per week and compete once a month in meets selected by the coach.

Prerequisites

  • Swimmers must be able to swim all four competitive strokes legally to qualify for this program
  • Swimmers must coordinate with staff and successfully complete a test practice before joining this program
  • Swimmers must have the correct discipline and attitude to participate in this intense training program

Swimmers in this program must maintain 75% or more monthly practice attendance and must complete in all of the meets selected by the coach to remain in the program and be considered for advancement into Senior program
