Long Bridge Park

Long Bridge Park

About this Park

With more than 36 acres of recreation and open space, Long Bridge Park is a distinctive showplace of environmentally sound redevelopment with a central expanse of attractive public green spaces and high-quality sports and recreation facilities, including the new Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center, that are accessible to all park users. Long Bridge Park is conveniently located adjacent to nearby urban corridors and the Potomac River.

Located north of Crystal City adjacent to I-395, the park features three full-size, lighted, synthetic, multi-sport, rectangular fields, a network of walkways, an overlook with views of the national monuments, and a three-quarter acre rain garden that directs runoff from the park’s sports fields and parking lot into a planted garden of native shrubs and perennials. Boeing Field #1 was partially funded by Marymount University and is used as the home field for Marymount’s men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse teams (permit takes priority).

The nearly ¾-mile long Esplanade overlooks the playing fields, the Potomac River and Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary and is a great place for train, plane and bird watching. The walking loop at the northern end of the Esplanade also has outdoor fitness stations adjacent to the trail.

At the southern end of the park is a pre-school playground for children ages 2-5 and a school-age playground for children ages 5-12. This playground also has an interactive fog area that is unique among playgrounds in Arlington.

There are three works of public art in Long Bridge Park, all created by nationally recognized artist Doug Hollis. Wave Arbor is comprised of two structures that are composed of anodized aluminum, stainless steel, painted steel and solar powered LED lights. Each structure supports 22 kinetic wing-like elements. The “wings” move in response to the wind and allow light to pass through them, creating shadows below. Lights at the ends of each “wing” register the motion of the wind at night. Sky Column is composed of tapered masts of stainless-steel tubing in the form of a column that projects 50 feet high from the ground and appear to become one with the sky. At night, up-lights at the base of the artwork are programed to brighten and dim in response to real-time variations of the wind.

Long Bridge Park received the Best New Facility Award from the Virginia Recreation and Park Society in 2012.
