“Safety and justice are not opposite values – we can’t have one without the other.”
– Parisa
Parisa Dehghani-Tafti is the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Arlington County and the City of Falls Church. Meet Parisa.
The Commonwealth’s Attorney is a constitutional officer elected to a four-year term. The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney is responsible for public safety in Arlington County, the City of Falls Church, and at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney is responsible for prosecuting criminal offenses in Arlington County, the City of Falls Church, and at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
The responsibilities of the office can be divided in four core functions: The first function is to set policy and priorities in order to make certain that the focus, manner, and extent of our prosecution decisions achieve both safety and justice for the community. Serious and violent crime requires a strong response and threat of incarceration; minor crimes or misbehavior related to drug addiction or mental health challenges require different responses and different uses of resources, including diversion, drug courts, and mental health courts.
The second function is to advance justice by ensuring that everyone is treated equally and welcoming new programs such as Restorative Arlington. The third function is to manage, train and supervise attorneys and staff. And last but not least is to undertake community engagement, public education, and transparency to prevent crime and respond to community concerns.
In cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, our team of attorneys, victim/witness specialists, legal assistants and support staff are dedicated to making our criminal legal system one that keeps us safe, that treats everyone fairly, and that reflects the best of our values.
