June Board Meeting Wrap-Up
Published on June 22, 2022
The Arlington County Board took several actions Saturday, June 18, 2022, at its regular County Board Meeting, including approving a use permit for a unified commercial/mixed-use development at 2608 Shirlington Road. This project will consist of a 4-story building with up to 30 residential units, including committed affordable housing units and a partially below-grade parking garage.
The County Board also presented a draft of its proposed Trust Policy to the community and heard public feedback. The Board encouraged continued dialogue before consideration of the final policy at the July Board Meeting.
On Tuesday, June 21, 2022, the County Board held its Recessed Meeting. Several actions were taken, and reports presented, including:
- An update from County Manager Mark Schwartz, which included an announcement that beginning June 22, Arlington County will begin offering both the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to children as young as 6 months. The vaccines will be administered by appointment only and residents can visit the County website for details and information.
- Chair Katie Cristol announced that Arlington has been designated a Platinum-level Walk Friendly Community by the Walk Friendly Communities program, a national recognition program managed by the University of North Carolina’s Highway Safety Research Center. Arlington County joins a group of 5 other Platinum-level communities.
- The County Board also passed a resolution adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Association’s (IHRA) Working Definition of Anti-Semitism for educational and monitoring use in Arlington. The non-legally binding IHRA definition has been adopted by communities across the United States and internationally. Establishing this common definition will help law enforcement, human rights officials, and victims themselves understand and name these incidents in order to improve reporting and ultimately bring greater attention and education to the growing problem of antisemitism.
On Thursday, June 23, 2022, Board Chair Katie Cristol will be joined by Board member Takis Karantonis and Arlington’s Assistant County Manager for Human Rights, Gurjit Chima, to celebrate Pride Month and discuss Arlington’s Municipal Equality Index (MEI) score of 100 for the second year in a row. The Board meetings can be viewed in their entirety on the County’s website and YouTube.
