Arlington County Sheriff Beth Arthur and numerous local and state officials will gather on May 7 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Arlington County Sheriff's Office. The event will also include recognition of National Correctional Employees Week, which runs May 5-11, as well as the 25th anniversary of the Arlington County Detention Facility.

Former Sheriff Jim Gondles (1980-1990) will give the keynote address. During his tenure, Gondles established the philosophy of direct supervision that still governs Arlington's detention operations today. He also established many rehabilitation programs that continue to be in practice.

County Board Chair Christian Dorsey will present the official Correctional Employees Week proclamation honoring current and former Sheriff's Office personnel. State Delegate Patrick Hope will present the anniversary proclamations.

The Arlington County Sheriff is responsible for the local jail, serves as administrative officer of the court, and performs other criminal law enforcement and civil law functions. Eighteen Sheriffs have served in Arlington since the elected office was established in 1869.

Refreshments will be served following the ceremony. If you plan to attend, please contact Jessika Thomas at 703-228-4457 or jdthomas@arlingtonva.us by close of business Mon., May 6.
