Arlington Honors 2019 Women of Vision

The Arlington County Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will honor three women for the 2019 Arlington County Women of Vision for their commitment and leadership in the Arlington community. The women will be recognized during a ceremony on Tuesday, June 25. Here are the honorees:

• GOVERNMENT: Melodee Melin was hired by Arlington County in 1974 as the first staff person to specialize in low- and moderate-income housing. Her Arlington career spanned more than 19 years, during which she served as the initial Section 8 Coordinator and later as Section Chief for housing rehabilitation and development. Her leadership of affordable housing initiatives in Arlington created a foundation for sustained success, serving 1400 low-income households annually during her tenure.


• BUSINESS: Sandra Redmore is Executive Director of the Clarendon Childcare Center, a child development program that provides a creative environment to nurture the social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of children from ages 2 to 6. Under her leadership, the school focuses on learning, which is fostered through exploration and play.


• NONPROFIT: Julia Tanner is the president and founder of the Virginia Equal Rights Coalition, a Virginia-based not-for-profit coalition of individuals and organizations supporting ratification by the Commonwealth of Virginia of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. During the past year, she has worked tirelessly presenting about the history and future impact of ratifying the ERA.

The celebration these extraordinary women will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, at Arlington Economic Development's offices, located at 1100 North Glebe Road, Suite 1500.

The event will also feature keynote speaker Tiffanye Wesley, Fire/EMS Battalion Chief with the Arlington County Fire Department. Wesley is the first African American woman to be promoted to this level of leadership in the department's 78-year history.
