The Arlington County Sheriff's Office's first-ever Inmate Creative Writing Contest Awards Ceremony will recognize first-, second- and third-place winners in the following categories: fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Inmates receiving recognition will be invited to read their winning entries aloud during the ceremony.
The creative writing contest, sponsored by Heard, a nonprofit program of the Del Ray Community Partnership, ran July 1-25. There were a total of 98 entries: 82 poems, 6 fictions and 10 non-fictions. Entries were judged on technical and artistic quality. Judges included Katherine E. Young, Arlington Poet Laureate; Jenny Sullivan, editor of Arlington Magazine; and Sly Young, College Professor, ACDF volunteer, and the 2018 recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major Innovative Service Award.
