Census — We're Still Counting!

Published on April 17, 2020

First, a huge thank you to everyone who has already filled out the 2020 Census! While it only takes 10 minutes, we know that the past few weeks have been difficult for everyone due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and we appreciate your taking the time to ensure your household is counted. Census data are used to determine funding for health clinics, emergency response, schools, and more.

How to Take the Census

You can take the Census online at 2020census.gov in English or 12 other languages, and can receive assistance through guides and videos available in 59 languages The online and phone options remain in place, and the Census Bureau has mailed paper questionnaires to households that have yet to respond. If you receive a reminder or a paper questionnaire after you have already taken the Census, you can disregard it as it was sent before you took the Census. But if you haven't responded yet, please do!

Callbacks and Follow-ups

To increase call center capacity, the Census Bureau offers a callback option for those who wish to respond by phone. You can leave a message and receive a call back from a census taker who will process your 2020 Census response. The callback option is available in English, Spanish, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Vietnamese, Arabic, French, Haitian Creole, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese and Tagalog.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Census Bureau is adapting or delaying some of its in-person operations to protect the health and safety of both its staff and the public. However, it plans to follow up with all households that do not respond on their own. If you do not respond online, by phone, or via the paper questionnaire, you may receive an in-person visit from a census taker later this year.

Arlingtonians Counted to Date

We are posting the County's response rate twice a week on our Facebook and Twitter accounts. As of this week, 59.4% of Arlington households have already been counted. Follow us on social media to see our progress, play census trivia, and find out how many more households are being counted each week!

Once you have responded, please encourage your family, friends and others to complete the census too.

The U.S. Census counts every resident in the nation, including right here in Arlington County. As mandated by the U.S. Constitution, America gets just one chance each decade to count its population. The collected data help to determine things like the number of seats Virginia has in the House of Representatives, and how to distribute federal funds to local communities like ours.
