Once the ideal imagery of Halloween, your gourds are now giving way to the elements, resembling something more appropriate for horror movies, not your porch. But before just tossing it in the trash, consider contributing it to the County's FREE Pumpkin Drop-off!

Give your Jack-o'-lantern new life after Halloween by dropping it off at the Earth Products Yard (4300 29th St S) for composting on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, from 8 a.m. — 4:30 p.m. The Arlington County Solid Waste Bureau will use the organic results in parks, topsoil and other landscaping projects.

Before dropping off your pumpkins, please remember:

  • Remove decorations, candles, paint and other inorganic materials.

  • Pumpkin composting drop-off is for Arlington residents only

  • No commercial establishments

The drop-off is part of the free monthly services — including paper shredding — at the Earth Products Recycling Yard in Shirlington.

The Solid Waste Bureau will also accept pumpkins through food scraps drop-off during normal business hours: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

If you can't bring your pumpkins to the drop off, you're encouraged to compost them at home if possible, like all viable food waste. Composting is a wonderful way to reduce disposal of organic kitchen, garden or yard waste, and it creates a rich soil amendment that's a natural for gardens. And don't forget, the food composting bins at the Trades Center are there for pumpkins — and most other food stuff — all year.

As a final option, pumpkins may be thrown away in the black trash cart (note: the green yard waste carts are only for things like grass clippings, leaves and trimmings too small to be included as bundled brush; they're not able to process food).
