County Kicks Off Child Care Initiative

- Focuses on availability, accessibility and quality
- Feedback sought on draft action plan
- Community meeting set for January 25
Arlington County today announced its Child Care Initiative
(CCI), an effort to address Arlington's child care challenges.
The initiative will promote the development of a child care system serving all Arlington County families, with a focus on vulnerable populations. It will be strengthened by engagement, participation, and collaboration across a diverse network of stakeholders. CCI ultimately aims to increase child care availability and accessibility (to include affordability), and improve the overall quality of child care programs.
Beginning in fall 2017, County staff launched a coordinated effort to bring together stakeholders from the public and private sectors, collect data, identify resources, engage with experts, and identify issues. This core group of more than 80 individuals developed a draft action plan
that was completed in December 2017. The team also compiled a detailed demographic overview of child care in Arlington
, which was used to inform development of the draft action plan.
"We're looking forward to opening the doors for a community conversation about how to achieve our goal of a childcare system that effectively serves and supports all Arlington County families. This draft action plan offers specific ideas and concrete steps to meet that goal," said Arlington County Board Vice Chair Katie Cristol, who serves as the County Board liaison to the CCI. "We're inviting everyone in to give feedback and help fine-tune this action plan, and to be part of the solution to the childcare challenge facing our families and local economy."
