  • Public-private partnership upgrades Tucker Field amenities

  • Community access to a "showcase" sports facility

  • GW to fully fund building new features

The Arlington County Board today approved the construction of a clubhouse with community-use indoor batting tunnels and covered outdoor batting cages at Barcroft Park's Tucker Field.

The improvements will be made under an amended public-private partnership with George Washington University, first signed in 2011. Under the original agreement, the university's baseball team, which has made Barcroft Park its home since 1992, made significant upgrades to the field and its adjacent facilities, creating more of a true ballpark atmosphere. GW annually contributes funding to the field's ongoing maintenance and repairs. GW will fully fund construction of the planned clubhouse and covering the batting cages.

"This public-private partnership with GW is a good deal for County taxpayers, for baseball and softball in Arlington, and for GW," said Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette. "The university's home field has been vastly improved, and the community has access to a top-quality field. These new amenities will make Tucker Field even more useful - and fun - for all who play there."

The Board voted 5 to 0 to authorize the County Manager to provide written permission to GW to proceed with the clubhouse project as well as to extend the 2011 agreement 10 more years. The indoor tunnels and outdoor cages will serve Arlington's baseball and softball communities. "Our partnership with Arlington County has been mutually beneficial, and we are excited to extend our agreement with the County" noted  GW Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero. "It has allowed us to provide an excellent home ballpark for our student-athletes, a ballpark that will be even better with the new clubhouse and enclosed batting cages. We look forward to hosting the Atlantic 10 Championship at Tucker Field in 2018. At the same time, Arlington county youth have the opportunity to play at a premier venue as they learn and grow through sports."

Barcroft Park has been the home of GW baseball since 1992. GW invested more than $3 million to renovate the facilities, and continues to contribute to maintenance as outlined in the 2011 agreement. Upgraded amenities include Arlington's first synthetic turf diamond field, expanded grandstand-style seating, covered dugouts, bullpens, batting cages, press box, concession stands, restrooms, an entry plaza and expanded parking. Tucker Field at Barcroft Park was dedicated in 2014 and is one of the top collegiate facilities in the region.

The 2011 agreement enabled the last phase of the County Board-approved Master Plan for Barcroft Park to be completed at no capital cost to the County. Since the field's completion, the County has hosted five camps over a five-week span each summer, ranging from 40-100 participants. The County's All-Star Babe Ruth League has hosted large-scale tournaments at the facility, including the Babe Ruth State Tournament and the Doc Bonnacorso Summer Classic tournament. Tucker Field at Barcroft Park hosted the 2015 Atlantic-10 Conference Baseball Tournament, marking the first time the annual event has been hosted in the region.
