Choose Your Ride this Cinco de Mayo

Published on May 02, 2017

ARLINGTON, Va. — Cinco de Mayo is an increasingly popular holiday in the United States and, like other holidays, it is often marked by parties and other celebrations that include alcohol consumption. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, 40 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes across the nation during the Cinco de Mayo holiday period in 2015. That's why the Arlington County Police Department is urging drivers to choose their ride now. If you plan on drinking this Cinco de Mayo, designate a sober driver to get you home safely or utilize the Washington Regional Alcohol Program's (WRAP) 2017 Cinco de Mayo SoberRide program.

On Friday, May 5th, the Arlington County Police and Fire Departments will host a joint interactive anti-drunk driving event highlighting the impact alcohol has on motor skills. This free event is open to the public and will take place at the intersection of Hudson Street and Wilson Boulevard beginning at 6:00 PM. The following road will be closed to vehicular traffic from approximately 5:00 PM until 3:00 AM to accommodate this event:

  • Hudson Street N. from Wilson Blvd. to the alley located in front of The Clarendon Apartments (1200 N. Herndon Street)

Motorists should be on the lookout for temporary "No Parking" signs in the area. Illegally parked vehicles may be ticketed or towed. If your vehicle is towed from a public street, call 703-558-2222.
