54 grant applications

The Arlington Commission for the Arts received 54 grant applications. Of the 28 applications requesting financial support, 21 were from non-profit arts groups and seven were from individual artists; 16 organizations requested performance/rehearsal space and technical services in addition to financial support; 10 organizations requested performance/rehearsal space and technical services only.

The Grants, which range from $23,292 to $1,167, are awarded to help with expenses involved with administration and program offerings, for specific projects, or to fund a proposed work.

The County operates theaters and has space available for performance rehearsals, dance studios, and a recording studio. Technical services provided by the County include professional assistance, access to the scene shop and discounted rental from the costume collection.

About the Arlington Arts Commission

The Arlington Commission for the Arts, appointed by the County Board, makes annual funding recommendations to the Board, in keeping with the County's "Policy for the Support of Arts Organizations and Artists." The policy, adopted by the County Board in 1990, authorizes the commission to decide on grants of facilities and technical services and make recommendations to the Board on direct financial support to Arlington arts organizations and artists.

All potential recipients must submit applications to the Commission. Advisory panels of art experts and County staff review the applications. The Commission then reviews each application and makes recommendations to the County Board.
