Essential Information

Clarendon Courthouse Neighborhood Snowy SignStay Informed

  • Sign up for Arlington Alert, Arlington’s free service that sends text messages to your mobile device during an emergency.
  • Check the County website, become a Facebook Fan, and follow us on Twitter.
  • Watch the cable channel for updates (Comcast 25/74 & Verizon 39/40).
  • Tune battery-powered radio in case of power outage.

 Sidewalks, Driveways, and Entrances

  • It is the civic responsibility of residents and business owners to clear snow from sidewalks/entryways around their property.
    • There is no ordinance or law in Arlington County for clearing snow from sidewalks.
    • Consider helping elderly or disabled neighbors if they're unable to clear their own snow.
    • Arlington County Government and Arlington Public Schools clear snow on their own property. Contact us with any issues (snow@arlingtonva.us).
  • Recent storms produced a huge volume of snow.
    • Snowplow drivers try not to push snow on sidewalks, however, it is sometimes unavoidable.
    • The County is also focused on trying to haul snow away. Find out where it goes.
    • Residents may also be able to participate in the County's snowblower loaner program.
  • If your apartment or condo complex is not clearing your sidewalks, speak to the property managers and your board – do your part to help the community.
  • To minimize the problem of the snowplow covering your driveway with snow after you've just shoveled it, shovel snow into the yard instead of into the street.
  • Shovel first! Removing the snow first allows walkways to dry out and prevents thick sheets of ice from forming.

Safety Tips

  • Clear snow from fire hydrants and storm drains.
  • Be mindful of roof safety and the impact of substantial snow accumulation and weight.
  • Make sure downspouts can drain away from your house to avoid potential seepage into your basement.
  • Conserve fuel during a storm by keeping your house cooler than normal. Lower the thermostat and close off unused rooms to save energy.
  • Beware of carbon monoxideIf using generators, kerosene heaters or gas fireplaces, read the owner's manual on maintaining proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Keep heaters at least three feet from flammable objects.
  • Check on others — help neighbors. Especially check on those who are elderly or at risk, to ensure they are safe. Also offer to help shovel snow
  • Avoid overexertion. Cold weather puts an added strain on the heart. Unaccustomed exercise such as shoveling snow or pushing a car can bring on a heart attack or make other medical conditions worse.
  • Before a storm, prepare to shelter in place. Keep a three-to-five-day supply of non-perishable food and water on hand, along with a non-electric can opener, battery-powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries. Learn more.

Drive Carefully (or Not At All)Watch Where You Park

  • Do not park vehicles on snow emergency routes when snow emergencies are declared.
  • Park vehicles in driveways where available, and leave room for plows to clear the street.
  • Do not drive unless necessary, so roads will be open for emergency and snow-removal vehicles.
  • Beware of black ice when driving — melting during the day can give way to freezing at night.
  • Avoid accidents — clear snow from the top of car roofs before driving.
