A General Election is a regularly-scheduled election for a particular office. On Tuesday, November 6, 2012, a General Election will be held for the offices of President and Vice President of the United States, U.S Senate, U.S House of Representatives, County Board, and School Board
A Special Election is an election held for a special purpose that is not regularly scheduled, such as to fill a vacancy in an office or for ballot questions. In Virginia all Special Elections are held on Tuesdays, and they are often held at the same time as a General Election. There will likely be a Special Election held on November 6 for state and local questions.
A Primary Election is an election held to assist the two major political parties (Democratic and Republican) in selecting their nominees for offices on the General Election Ballot. In Virginia, primaries for offices elected in November are normally held on the second Tuesday in June. In 2012 we will have a Republican Primary for U.S. Senate and a Democratic Primary for U.S. House of Representatives, 8th District, on Tuesday, June 12.
As more ballot information becomes available, such as candidates and issue information, we will list it below. All polling places are open from 6 am to 7 pm on Election Days.
