Coming to an Intersection Near You: PhotoRED Light Cameras

Four heavily trafficked County intersections are being outfitted with PhotoRED light cameras.

  • Cameras will be activated in June, 2010
  • There is a 30-day awareness period. During this time, violators will receive a warning.
  • After the awareness period, motorists caught running red lights at these intersections will be required to pay a $50 fine.
  • The infraction will be treated as a civil offense, such as a parking ticket, and will not go on the offender’s driving record.

The intersections are:

  • Eastbound Lee Highway at North Lynn Street  (Activated June 21, 2010)
  • Southbound Ft. Myer Drive at westbound Lee Highway (Activated June 21, 2010)
  • Westbound Lee Highway at Washington Boulevard (Activated June 21, 2010)
  • Northbound North Glebe Road at Fairfax Drive (may be activated June 21, 2010)

Factors used to determine the intersections to be equipped with the cameras include:

  • Accident rate at the intersection
  • Rate of red light violations at the intersection
  • Ability of officers to safely apprehend violators at the intersection

Under Virginia state code, the County is authorized to install PhotoRED cameras at up to 20 intersections.

No traffic delays are expected during installation of the lights.
