A General Election is a regularly-scheduled election for a particular office. On Tuesday, November 2, 2010, a General Election will be held for the offices of Member, House of Representatives (8th District), County Board, and School Board.
A Special Election is an election held for a special purpose that is not regularly scheduled, such as to fill a vacancy in an office or for ballot questions. In Virginia all Special Elections are held on Tuesdays, and they are often held at the same time as a General Election. We can expect to see several questions on the Nov. 2 ballot as a Special Election, including proposed amendments to the Constitution of Virginia and proposed County bond questions.
A Primary Election is an election held to assist the two major political parties (Democratic and Republican) in selecting their nominees for offices on the General Election Ballot. If primaries are called for, the primary date will be June 8, 2010. There is a strong probability of at least a Republican Primary for House of Representatives, provided candidates qualify by the April 9 deadline.
Ballot information will be available here as it becomes available.
Several candidates have expressed interest in seeking the Republican nomination for House of Representatives, although it is still too early for them to qualify for the ballot. For more information, see the Arlington County Republican Committee's web page.
The deadline to register to vote or update your address for the November 2, 2012 General Election is Tuesday, October 12. If there are primaries on June 8, the registration deadline will be Monday, May 17.
If you are already registered to vote at your current address, you do not need to register again.
If you have moved recently within Arlington or within Virginia and haven't updated your address, you might still be eligible to vote. Please call 703.228.3456 for more information.
