Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) DROP is a Deferred Retirement Option Program. It is a voluntary program that provides a way for you to continue to work for the County in your present or a similar capacity, earn a salary, and receive a portion of your retirement benefits at the same time. The portion that you can receive is equal to the monthly retirement benefit you would be eligible for at the time you DROP. It is credited to a separate “DROP account” within the 401(a) plan. You receive the accumulated value of your DROP account when you actually stop working for the County in addition to your monthly retirement check.
