Long Bridge Park Plan

The 2004 Adopted Master Plan provides balanced programs for indoor and outdoor facilities.

The centerpiece of the first phase will be a "state of the art" community sport and fitness center. The conceptual plan for this new facility was developed to serve the broadest spectrum of abilities and interests and to provide a comprehensive family destination where each member of a family can participate in a variety of activities simultaneously.

Long Bridge Park Rec West Rendering The mix of outdoor facilities in the master plan will combine active outdoor athletic fields with multiple opportunities for other less formal recreational pursuits. The recommended plan combines four synthetic grass rectangular athletic fields, more than one mile of on-site walking trails, open lawn areas, a connection across the railroad to the Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary and opportunities for playgrounds, spray fountains, and other recreational spaces yet to be determined.

The Long Bridge Park Design Advisory Committee has selected a preferred option from among several plans for the Long Bridge Park (formerly North Tract) recreational facilities. Below are images of the Committee’s current thinking on the refinement of the overall preferred option, within budget constraints. They illustrate the complete building and Phase 1 of the outdoor amenities.

Outdoor Fun: Something for Everyone

A broad, half-mile long, raised walkway, known as the Esplanade, connects the park and its recreational facilities. Views from this area include Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary as well as the historic skyline of our Nation's Capital and Washington Monument.

West of the Esplanade, a large rain garden infiltrates runoff from the athletic fields to support a planted garden of native shrubs and perennials.

The 46-acre Long Bridge Park area is bounded on the north by the former "Twin Bridges Marriott" site and on the south by South 10th Street. The area is bounded on the west by Old Jeff Davis Highway and on the east by the Roaches Run Water Fowl Sanctuary. The County has owns approximately 28 of the 46 acres in the North Tract area. The history identifying the future park site goes back to the early 1990's.
