Black History Month image  Black History Month in Arlington, February 2009
The theme for 2009 was “The Journey Continues” with the celebration of Black History Month in February in Arlington. "The Dream" of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was celebrated on January 18th, in our 40th Annual Tribute to Dr. King. Winning essays from the King Essay Contest were read. :: Read the winning essays.

Submitted in January, nominations for the Bill Thomas Park Service Award were open to individual citizens, groups and organizations. The award is presented for the giving of personal time or expertise for the betterment of the natural, cultural, recreational, environmental, aesthetic, horticultural or historical resources in connection with Arlington County’s parks, environment and leisure opportunities during the past year.

Walter Reed Community Center  Walter Reed Earns Award of Excellence
The Northern Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties presented Arlington County’s Walter Reed Community Center with the Award of Excellence as the Best Building, Environmentally Responsible in 2007. Walter Reed Community Center, in South Arlington, is a full-service center that supports its neighbors with senior, teen and tot community programs, and also provides programming and facilities that support the County as a whole. It opened in May 2006 and is designed to meet the Silver Standard Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™.
