Work Permits

Are you 14 or 15 and want to work?

In Virginia, if you are 14 or 15 years of age you must have an employment certificate (work permit) to work at a job. You must have this work permit even though you are married, or have graduated from high school. If you are under the age of 14 you can NOT be issued a work permit.

Who issues a Work Permit?

You must get the forms from your local school. These forms are:

  1. Intention to employ

This form is filled out by the employer. He must state clearly the kind of work you will be performing, and verify you will only be allowed to work the hours specified by Virginia's child labor laws.

  2. Permission for employment

This form is filled out by one of your parents. It is best if you and your parent go together to the school to sign the form. If necessary, your parent may submit a notarized statement giving permission for you to work.

Along with these two forms, you should bring evidence of your age, such as:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Bible or Baptismal Record
  • Insurance Policy (at least one year old)
  • School Record
