OUR MISSION
The Job Avenue is an Arlington County Department of Human Services program committed to providing successful employment opportunities in the community for adults experiencing a serious mental illness through an array of supportive, comprehensive, and integrated services based on individual choice.
EMPLOYMENT SERVICES OFFERED BY JOB AVENUE
Work Preparation Training
The Job Avenue currently offers the following training to prepare individual for employment:
- Employment Development Training: This is a four session training that helps individuals assess their employment interests and capabilities and develop strategies to balance work and mental illness and to acquire job maintenance skills.
- Job Club: Provides opportunities for individuals to practice the skills needed to choose, find, and maintain employment.
- Computer Skills Training: Provides opportunities for individuals to learn basic computer skills such as Microsoft Windows 95, Word, and Excel.
- Volunteer Positions: Assists individuals in obtaining volunteer positions within the community.
Vocational Services
- Supported Employment: The supported employment program assists individuals in finding and maintaining employment of their choice in the community. Services include:
- Situational Assessment: An opportunity for a consumer to “try out” for jobs that are of interest and a good match to him/her.
- Job Development: Direct, active, individual assistance with job seeking and job maintenance skills, job matching and prospective employer contacts.
- Job Placement and Training: Individual placement and initial training in competitive employment along with support and ongoing training while on the job.
- Transitional Employment: Assists individuals who have worked successfully within the Clubhouse programs in obtaining Transitional Employment (TE) within the community. TE places individuals in part-time, entry-level positions in the community at a regular place of business. Vocational Specialists train and work closely with the individuals to provide support, encouragement, and assistance. The purpose of TE is to earn wages, build references, and increase work related skills in a real place of business.
- SOC Positions: Provides employment opportunities in a structured, supervised group setting with staff support at contract sites located in the community.
- Follow Along Services: Provided to all consumers placed in a Supported Employment job placement. Ongoing support and assistance are given to the individual and the employer.
