What is Clarendon House?

Clarendon House is a psychosocial rehabilitation day program that offers vocational, social, educational and case management opportunities to adults in Arlington, Va. who are experiencing a mental illness. The program strives to create an accepting, supportive and encouraging environment that emphasizes the strengths and capabilities of each individual. Its focus is on helping people develop the ability to lead independent lives in the community despite having mental illness.

Central to the program philosophy is the belief that meaningful work and valued relationships are essential in fulfilling one's goals. The program provides a place for consumers to socialize, work, eat, meet and become involved in running the program. Daily activities include preparing a daily newsletter, making and serving lunch, computer training, receptionist duties and building maintenance.

The program also includes a social club, men's and women's groups, support dinners and community meetings where consumers can talk, enjoy each other's company and express views. The relationships developed here go beyond any consumers might find in the outside world. Further, members are members for life. They will not be turned away.

Clarendon House Guarantees Four Rights to Individuals

  1. A place to come.
  2. Meaningful work.
  3. Meaningful relationships.
  4. A place to return.

These rights help individuals cope with their mental illness in an environment that is safe and supportive.
