Station 2 - Ballston Fire Station

Foundation Stabilization Project

The foundation for the bunk-room section of Fire Station 2 is continuously moving and without intervention will eventually collapse. It was also determined during the structure analysis that the earthquake of August 23, 2011 amplified the existing damages.

Fire Station 2 is a one story, three-bay brick firehouse, constructed approximately 20 years ago. The northeast side of the building was constructed as an addition to the existing firehouse. The underground storage tank for the existing fuel station was previously located at the northeast construction. The bunk rooms’ foundation was constructed on the disturbed soil after the storage tank was relocated. This poorly compacted soil has since been moving, with the northeast section of the building moving along with it. The partial building movement has caused foundation and wall cracks. This poses a potential safety hazard  to the firefighters when using this section of the building as bunk rooms.

Project Plan

The work needed to resolve these issues includes, but is not limited to, the selective demolition and replacement of exterior and interior masonry walls, crack repairs in masonry walls, slab jacking of existing slab on grade floors, installation of new structural steel columns and base plates, roof drain relocation, exterior finish demolition and installation, selective roof coping removal and replacement, removal and replacement of exterior metal panels and windows, utility relocation and temporary connections, construction of helical pier and foundation stabilization brackets, excavation for the roof drain and foundation repair, concrete sidewalk demolition and installation, and painting.

Timeline

Construction will begin on September 10, 2012 and will be completed in fall 2013.
