Arlington County adopted several ordinances to protect the land, waterways and the Chesapeake Bay. These ordinances were designed to manage and minimize the effect of land development on
waterways. These items include erosion and sediment control, stormwater detention and management practices, resource protection areas, and floodplain management practices.

Resource Protection Areas (RPAs) -- Extremely sensitive areas within 100 feet of a streams, rivers or water body
Resource Management Areas (RMAs) -- Areas in which improper development can also degrade water quality
