Arlington E-CARE (formerly Environmental Extravaganza)

 

The Arlington Environmental Collection and Recycling (E-CARE) is an event where Arlington residents can safely dispose of household hazardous materials, recycle bikes, small metal items, shoes, eyeglasses, and durable medical equipment. In addition, compost bins will be for sale. Before you come to E-CARE, talk to your neighbors! Combine your items and save a trip to the collection site. NOTE:  Electronics will NOT be collected during this event due to space limitations. Residents may instead bring their electronics to the County’s Household Hazardous Materials facility at the Water Pollution Control Plant or participate in curbside recycling.

  Location and Hours

DATE:    Saturday, April 17, 2010.  8:30 AM - 2:30 PM 

LOCATION: Thomas Jefferson Middle School at 125 S. Old Glebe Rd. One block east of Glebe Rd. and one block south of Rt. 50. (703) 228-5900. The entrance will be marked.

DIRECTIONS: Take Route 50 West. Make a left turn on Fillmore St. Make a right turn on 2nd St. South at the light. TJ Community Center is a few blocks ahead on your right.  After passing the TJ Community Center, turn right onto S. Old Glebe Rd.

From north Arlington, take Glebe Road south. After crossing route 50, make a left on 2nd St. South. Make a left onto Old S. Glebe Rd. 

From south Arlington, take Walter Reed north. After crossing Columbia Pike and passing the school/ library on your left, make a left on S. 2nd St. TJ Community Center is a few blocks ahead on your right.  After passing the TJ Community Center, turn right onto S. Old Glebe Rd.

  Household Hazardous Materials Collection

Get rid of your unwanted paint products (25 can limit), flammable solvents, automotive fluids, garden chemicals, household cleaners, and many other flammable, poisonous or corrosive household products. We provide environmentally safe disposal for your hazardous materials. This collection is open to Arlington residents only. Commercial or business wastes will not be accepted. HHM Drop-Off Guidelines

  • Materials should be in original container or properly labeled.
  • Leaking containers should be over-packed to prevent spills.
  • Non-hazardous refuse materials will not be accepted.
  • No business or commercial wastes will be accepted.
  • Bring ID to verify residency.
  • Materials are accepted only during posted event hours.
  • Smoking is not allowed at the drop-off site.

Bike Recycling

Bikes for the World will be conducting a used bike collection. Bikes for the World accepts serviceable and repairable bicycles to be sent to countries where they are needed for basic transportation. A $10 donation per bike is requested to offset shipping charges. For more information, please contact at Bikes for the World at 703-525-0931.  Portable sewing machines, baseball and soccer equipment, and bike parts and accessories are, also, collected and shipped overseas with the reconditioned bicycles.

  Small Metal Item Recycling

Acceptable metal items include pots, pans, tools, pipes, Venetian blinds, small appliances, and other metal items fitting an 11 1/2 inch by 46 inch opening. These items are also accepted at Arlington County Recycling Drop-off centers.

 

  Computer, Electronics, and Television Recycling

Electronics will NOT be collected during this event due to space limitations. Residents may instead bring their electronics to the County’s Household Hazardous Materials facility at the Water Pollution Control Plant or participate in curbside recycling.

 

  Clothing, Linens, Shoes, Microwaves and Air Conditioners

We are collecting “gently used” but functional shoes, clothing, linens, microwaves and air conditioners. Children and youth sizes are especially needed.  Summer and mid-weight clothing is most needed.  Linens are needed including sheets, blankets, bed spreads, and towels.  Receipts for tax purposes are available.   Eyeglasses and Medical Equipment

Bring your old eyeglasses and sunglasses to send to those who need them overseas. They will be cleaned, sorted and dispensed at clinics run by volunteers. Recipients are tested and fitted with donated prescription glasses.  Wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, and braces are shipped to clinics in remote villages.

  Books

Diana’s Books will be accepting gently-used books, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, and books-on-tape. Some items are sent to international beneficiaries, and others are sold on Amazon in order to raise funds. Diana’s Books is a non profit organization recognized by the IRS. Items that cannot be accepted include: magazines, encyclopedias before 1986, paperback novels without bar codes, and musty books.
