The Division of Operations has long been responsible for maintaining a clean environment, ensuring clean water is returned to Four Mile Run – and, ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay – and providing solid waste management services. This expertise was combined with the complementary programs at Water/Sewer/Streets to safely manage the sanitary, storm, and drinking water systems. The division also includes the Water Pollution Control Plant, Solid Waste, Utilities and the Equipment Bureau.

Arlington’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) is a major, multi-million-dollar undertaking critical to investment in the community’s future. To provide a systematic and thorough approach to this vital program, the County consolidated all capital projects and engineering activities into one department, including Design and Construction, Engineering, Facilities Management, Real Estate, and the GIS Mapping Center. The goal is to reduce the time between project approval and project completion in order to save money and fulfill community expectations. Sound environmental design is also incorporated in projects.
