ARLINGTON, VA – Arlington Neighborhood College is now accepting applications for its 2011 civic leadership development program. The free seven-week bilingual (Spanish and English) program develops effective community leaders and is open to anyone aged 18 and older who lives or works in Arlington County.
Applications for the limited number of spaces in Arlington Neighborhood College are due no later than March 30, 2011, and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Sessions will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday evening from April 6 to May 18. Dinner will be provided. The graduation ceremony will take place at the recessed County Board meeting on Tuesday evening, June 14.
“The Neighborhood College is for anyone who wants to do something in their community,” said Portia Clark, a 2000 Neighborhood College graduate and past-president of the Nauck Civic Association.
“It is the best place to start to learn about leaders, Arlington’s government structure and much more,” said Clark. “I have lived in Arlington all my life, but the Neighborhood College helped me to better understand how systems worked, available resources and how citizens could be more engaged in making our community a better place to live."
Since its inception in 2000, Arlington Neighborhood College has graduated 198 residents. The program provides information on core communication and influencing skills, giving and receiving feedback, conflict management and negotiation, consensus building and organizing for action. Participants will practice these skills by engaging in dialogue with a broad range of Arlington County officials and staff in areas of concern to them. They will also receive an overview of Arlington County services, with special focus on the police department, code enforcement, tenant-landlord issues, affordable housing and substance abuse.
People who are committed to their neighborhoods, interested in neighborhood issues, willing to bring energy to neighborhood activities, and available on Wednesday evenings from April 6 to May 18 are encouraged to apply.
Arlington, Va., is a world-class residential, business and tourist location that was originally part of the "10 miles square" parcel of land surveyed in 1791 to be the Nation's Capital. It is the geographically smallest self-governing county in the United States, occupying slightly less than 26 square miles. Arlington maintains a rich variety of stable neighborhoods, quality schools and enlightened land use, and received the Environmental Protection Agency's highest award for "Smart Growth" in 2002. Home to some of the most influential organizations in the world - including the Pentagon - Arlington stands out as one of America's preeminent places to live, visit and do business.
