County Government Reduces Carbon Footprint at Arlington County Fair

New look reflects County’s efforts to go green

ARLINGTON, Va. – Arlington County government will have a new, streamlined presence this year at the County Fair, which runs from Aug. 6 through Aug. 10 at Thomas Jefferson Community Center.

To reduce the County’s carbon footprint at the fair, reduce costs and make County government services and information more readily accessible to the public, the County will group its displays into areas, rather than by individual departments. Brochures and handouts will be limited and there will be highly selective giveaways.

The County expects the moves to save $25,000 this year and more in future years.

County government subject areas that will greet visitors include:

  • Get it Done – kiosks with computers where staff can help residents go online and get things done.
  • Play and Learn – educational opportunities, fun, fitness, recreation, arts programming.
  • Go Green – County’s Fresh AIRE (Arlington Initiative to Reduce Emissions) efforts, recycling, tree programs, transit and other environmental initiatives.
  • Get Involved – volunteer opportunities, voting, foster parenting, civic engagement.
  • Public Safety – keeping our community safe; crime and fire prevention.
  • Constitutional Officers – how they serve the County.

Voter Registration – sign-up to register, voting booths.

Background:

Arlington County Government is a sponsor of the Arlington County Fair, which is run by the Arlington County Fair Board, a private volunteer organization. The annual event draws tens of thousands of residents and visitors to Thomas Jefferson Community Center at 3501 South Second Street.

Fair patrons cheer the racing pigs, whirl on carnival rides, sample bar-b-que, cotton candy and ethnic foods at vendors’ booths and view competitive displays ranging from handicrafts to creative writing.

Evoking the County’s more rural past, the Arlington County Fair is one of Arlington’s most popular community events. Admission to the fair is free of charge. For more information, visit the Arlington County Fair Web site.

Arlington, Va., is a world-class residential, business and tourist location that was originally part of the "10 miles square" parcel of land surveyed in 1791 to be the Nation's Capital. It is the geographically smallest self-governing county in the United States, occupying slightly less than 26 square miles. Arlington maintains a rich variety of stable neighborhoods, quality schools and enlightened land use, and received the Environmental Protection Agency's highest award for "Smart Growth" in 2002. Home to some of the most influential organizations in the world - including the Pentagon - Arlington stands out as one of America's preeminent places to live, visit and do business.
