Favola Re-elected Chairman of the Northern Virginia Regional Commission

ARLINGTON, Va -- Arlington County Board member Barbara A. Favola has been re-elected chairman of the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC), a coalition of 14 cities, towns and counties that work together on regional issues including the environment and land use, human services, legislative analysis and emergency planning.

"I am honored to have been granted a second year at the helm and look forward to working with my colleagues and continuing to make Northern Virginia a quality place to live, work and play," Favola said. "The Commission is committed to working with the General Assembly to produce a meaningful transportation plan that enables Northern Virginia to reduce congestion and grow in a sensible way. In the coming year, the commission also will advocate for other key policy issues important to the region, such as cleaning up the Chesapeake and working with the governor on the Start Strong Initiative to provide universal access to pre-school for children four years old and under."

This is Favola’s second one-year term as Chairman on the Commission.  She previously served as NVRC’s Vice Chairman, Treasurer and Chairman of the Operations Committee, Chairman of the Human and Community Services Committee, and Chairman of the Communications Committee.  Favola has represented Arlington on NVRC since 1998.  She is an Assistant to the President for Government Relations at Marymount University.

Also re-elected to their same positions for a second term were Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald E. Connolly as Vice-Chairman and Manassas City Council Vice Mayor Harry J. “Hal” Parrish, II as Treasurer.

NVRC's programs and policies are established by the 25-member Board of Commissioners composed of elected officials appointed by the governing bodies of NVRC's 14 member localities.  The local government members are the Counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William; the Cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park; and the Towns of Dumfries, Herndon, Leesburg, Purcellville and Vienna.  NVRC is funded by annual contributions from member local governments, grants from the federal and state government, other public and private entities, and appropriations of the Virginia General Assembly.

Arlington, Va., is a world-class residential, business and tourist location that was originally part of the "10 miles square" parcel of land surveyed in 1791 to be the Nation's Capital. It is the geographically smallest self-governing county in the United States, occupying slightly less than 26 square miles. Arlington maintains a rich variety of stable neighborhoods, quality schools and enlightened land use, and received the Environmental Protection Agency's highest award for "Smart Growth" in 2002. Home to some of the most influential organizations in the world - including the Pentagon - Arlington stands out as one of America's preeminent places to live, visit and do business.
