ARLINGTON, Va. – Arlington residents whose vehicles carry out-of-state license plates will have to pay an annual license fee of $100, starting in April 2008, according to Arlington County’s Commissioner of Revenue.
State law requires that Virginia residents title and register with the Commonwealth’s Department of Motor Vehicles all the vehicles they own within 30 days of moving to Virginia, unless otherwise exempted by law. Arlington residents must register their vehicles with the County within 60 days of move-in.
“Unless there is a legal reason not to, all vehicles owned by Arlington residents should comply with Virginia law and should display Virginia license plates,” Commissioner of Revenue Ingrid Morroy said.
Current Virginia license plates may be obtained by visiting the DMV Select, located at the Commissioner’s office, 2100 Clarendon Boulevard, 2nd floor, or at any Virginia DMV Customer Service location.
Residents have until March 31, 2008 to comply with the law before Morroy begins to assess the annual fees.
For a more detailed explanation of the law, and conditions for exemption from the law, visit the Commissioner of Revenue website, contact the Office of the Commissioner of Revenue at 703-228-3135, or e-mail vehicle@arlingtonva.us.
Arlington, Va., is a world-class residential, business and tourist location that was originally part of the "10 miles square" parcel of land surveyed in 1791 to be the Nation's Capital. It is the geographically smallest self-governing county in the United States, occupying slightly less than 26 square miles. Arlington maintains a rich variety of stable neighborhoods, quality schools and enlightened land use, and received the Environmental Protection Agency's highest award for "Smart Growth" in 2002. Home to some of the most influential organizations in the world - including the Pentagon - Arlington stands out as one of America's preeminent places to live, visit and do business.
