ARLINGTON, Va. – From stories set in the colonial Andean city of Quito, Ecuador to the hot tropical rainforests of the Brazilian Amazon to the sunny and breezy beaches of Puerto Rico, Cuentos y Más takes listeners every week on a trip to Latin America and the Caribbean. Along the way, listeners – particularly children – learn about the cultures of different countries, and improve their English and Spanish language skills.
Starting May 20, Cuentos y Más will air every Saturday at 9:30 a.m., on Spanish-language radio station Radio Latina (950 – 810 AM). This is the first time an Arlington County produced program will air in commercial radio station as part of the station’s regular programming. Cuentos y Más radio show also will be available online on the County’s and Radio Latina’s Web site.
The goal of the partnership between Arlington Libraries and Radio Latina is to promote reading among Latino children and raise awareness of the many programs and services that Arlington Libraries offer to the community.
About Cuentos y Más
Cuentos y Más is produced by Arlington Virginia Network (AVN-74), the County's government cable station. Host Mariela Aguilar, outreach librarian in the library’s multicultural services unit, performs bilingual stories, music, and movement for children ages 4-8.
The show has been awarded Outstanding Children’s Program by the Virginia Public Library Directors Association and Third Place Programming Award from the National Association of Telecommunications Officers & Advisors (NATOA). The County has produced 16 episodes of the television show and makes them available on its cable station, through the County Web site, and on DVD at all of the County's seven library branches. Arlington, Va., is a world-class residential, business and tourist location that was originally part of the "10 miles square" parcel of land surveyed in 1791 to be the Nation's Capital. It is the geographically smallest self-governing county in the United States, occupying slightly less than 26 square miles. Arlington maintains a rich variety of stable neighborhoods, quality schools and enlightened land use, and received the Environmental Protection Agency's highest award for "Smart Growth" in 2002. Home to some of the most influential organizations in the world - including the Pentagon - Arlington stands out as one of America's preeminent places to live, visit and do business.
