The Budget Committee is established by the bylaws (25K PDF format). The Committee consists of not less than five Commission members appointed by the Commission Chair. The Committee:
The Executive Committee is established by the bylaws (25K PDF format). The Committee consists of the Commission Chair and Vice Chair plus three additional Commission members to be appointed by the Commission Chair. The Committee has and can exercise the powers and duties of the Commission between meetings as appropriate. It meets at the call of the Chair. The presence of three members constitutes a quorum for the transaction of business.
The Housing and Supportive Services Committee identifies housing and supportive services concerns and needs. The Committee looks at housing options available and needed, including assisted living housing, for Arlington County's older residents, in order to provide an environment which maximizes independence while offering appropriate levels of care. The Committee also identifies gaps in amenities, programs and services, addressing issues of supportive service programs that are designed to make it possible for Arlington's older residents to "age in place." The Committee makes recommendations to the Commission for appropriate actions.
The Legislative Committee, either independently or through its involvement with the Northern Virginia Aging Network (NVAN), develops a draft legislative package for the Virginia General Assembly which is presented to the Commission for its endorsement. The Committee monitors issues of interest to the Commission at the State and Federal levels. The Committee meets with members of the Arlington County Board, members of the Arlington delegation to the General Assembly and elected Federal leaders, advocating on behalf of the Commission's position on legislative matters.
The Membership Committee recruits interested and knowledgeable people to serve on the Commission. It coordinates with the Agency on Aging to develop vacancy announcements in a timely manner. The Committee reviews applications and interviews applicants, and reviews any possible reappointment of Commission members. It prepares a list of recommended individual(s) for appointment and reappointment, as appropriate. The Commission Chair submits the list to the County Board for appointment.
The Nominating Committee prepares a slate for Chair and Vice Chair to be presented and voted upon at the October meeting. The terms of Chair and Vice Chair commence at the November meeting.
The Public Information and Outreach Committee assesses existing knowledge of older persons concerning services and programs of interest to them. The Committee also develops and implements outreach and information programs which provide persons in Arlington County with knowledge of and access to available services, activities, and programs, including educational opportunities. It makes recommendations to the Commission for appropriate action.
The Senior Center Committee serves as the Commission's liaison to all Arlington County senior centers, in particular those centers that serve meals and the more frail older persons. It visits and evaluates centers in accordance with the guidelines it has established, and reports to the Commission on center activities and any unmet needs. The Committee coordinates its visits and evaluations with the Office of Senior Adult Programs in the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Resources, and works with the Senior Adult Council.
The Transportation Committee reviews transportation issues and/or programs. It recommends to the Commission necessary actions to expand or create services.
